North East star Leif Taggart, who fights out of Rich Cadden’s Chokdee gym in York, put his WKA British title on the line against Anthony Ferguson of Renegade gym in Stevenage in a fight-of-the-night contender at SuperFight Series on Sunday evening.
Amir Subasic’s SuperFight Series II: Pure was held at the St. Albans Arena in front of a sold out crowd, featuring a stacked card which included a 4-man tournament, a WKA English title fight, two WKA British title fights and a WKA World Title main event featuring Kev Ward.
Leif, who was crowned the 63kg WKA British Champion earlier this year on Garry Bell’s Contender Promotions: New Blood, was the taller fighter and had a considerable reach advantage, but Ferguson did well on closing the distance as the two exchanged in the early rounds.
The fourth round saw Ferguson twice back Taggart into the corner and land some heavy shots forcing the referee to give Leif a standing 8-count.
Leif came out looking re-energized in the fifth and final round and landed more significant shots than his opponent which could have ended the bout at any time, with the referee this time giving Ferguson a standing 8-count.
The contest went the distance though and the judges scored the contest in favour of Ferguson as the whole arena stood in applause of an amazing display of heart by both fighters.
With Ferguson announcing this as has last ever fight, the belt now becomes vacant, and there are rumours this could be contested for at DUEL 7 at the NE6 Suite in Newcastle in November.
More news coming soon.
